POD: Pork Belly @ Lilette (New Orleans)
Today’s photo comes from a question asked on the Houston Chowhounds mailing list about Lilette in the Garden District of New Orleans as a potential site of a special occasion dinner.
I stopped by Lilette about a year ago and while it’s not a restaurant I’d choose for an epic meal you will remember for the rest of your life, it was one of the best French bistros I have come across last year. Lilette a perfect lunch stop before a walk through dozens of antique stores on Magazine street or a quiet dinner away from French Quarter madness at night.
braised pork belly with tomato, cucumber, basil salad
My friends weren’t that enthusiastic about their lunch selections, but I loved my braised pork belly, which had spent some quality time under a broiler. More impressive still were the immaculate cucumbers and tomatoes that tasted as if they had come directly from the field and had never seen the inside of a fridge. Sometimes a simple dish with perfect ingredients is better than an overwrought culinary creation and this seems to be what Lilette does best.
Desserts were simple, classically French and very well done (try the poached pears). About as good as lunch gets, overall.

I love pork belly done right…
Quick question. One of my best friend’s girlfriends is vege and coming into town for Valentine’s day. He would like to take her somewhere tasty and cute and romantic. Any suggestions?
My wife is vegetarian and the best meal she had recently has been at Textile and that’s considering I have dragged her to some really impressive places lately. They will do a vegetarian tasting if you call ahead.
Hi, Misha!
I’ve been reading (okay, stalking) your page for a little less than a year and I always want to comment but never get around to doing it… until now. I’m so glad you talked about Lilette because it’s one of my favorite places in New Orleans (I’m a native). There are a lot of good eats in New Orleans, but Lilette (along with August, Galatoire’s, Arnaud’s, and a select few others) is definitely amongst the best.
A little tidbit about Lilette and an awesome lounge called The Bridge House. Lilette and Bridge House both used to be owned by a husband and wife duo until they split up. The husband (being a chef) took Lilette and the wife (a wine fanatic) took Bridge House. Bridge House doesn’t serve food, but they have menus for restaurants that will deliver to the lounge and you can bring your dogs there, too!
That actually sounds really useful. We always feel bad that we leave our dogs are home when we go on vacation and decided to rent a house in the Garden District next time so we can take them alone. Now they can come to dinner too:)
